Defense Secretary James Mattis spoke to reporters following a meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghan in Kabul about an attack on Afghan soldiers inside a mosque. In his comments Secretary Mattis said if the Taliban wants to engage in the political process, they need to renounce the violence and reject terrorism. On Russia’s role, he added that the U.S. and NATO will confront Russia if reports of assistance to the Taliban are true and violate international law. Afghanistan military operations commander General John Nicholson also took part in the news conference. close
