House Member Lamont delivered his resignation speech for the post of chancellor of the exchequer in a session of the British House of Commons. In his remarks, Mr. Lamont praised the policies of the conservative government but criticized his firing by the prime minister. His remarks were followed by remarks by the leader of the opposition Labour Party, John Smith, as well as other members trading barbs concerning the governing ability of the conservative and labour parties in the United Kingdom. Prime Minister Major also arose to defend the policies of the government and criticized the opposition leadership. close
