Deputy Secretary of State Nomination The Senate Foreign Relations Committee held a hearing on the nomination of John Sullivan to be State Department’s deputy secretary. Mr. Sullivan previously served as deputy secretary of commerce under the George W. Bush administration. He answered a range of questions on proposed cuts to the State Department’s personnel staff, Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential elections as well as European elections, and China’s role in North Korea. Mr. Sullivan told committee members that the U.S. must be “robust” in dealing with Russia and cybersecurity and that any interference with elections is a “profound threat” to the American way of life. close
