Defense Secretary James Mattis and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair General Joseph Dunford provided an update on the military campaign to combat ISIS. Secretary Mattis said President Trump had ordered a tactical shift that involves the U.S.-led coalition encircling ISIS fighters in their strongholds before starting the military campaign. General Dunford acknowledged that recent airstrikes against pro-Syrian government forces were a “force protection measure.” Brett McGurk, the special presidential envoy for the global coalition to counter ISIS, also briefed reporters. close
