British members returned to the House of Commons for the first day of the new parliament since the June 8th general election. Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservative Party received the most party votes, but was short of a full majority in the House of Commons. During this session, Speaker John Bercow was re-elected as speaker and customarily “dragged unwillingly” back to the speaker’s chair -- a custom that dates back hundreds of years when there could be consequences if the Speaker disagreed with a king. Following Mr. Bercow’s re-election, Prime Minister May and Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn delivered speeches and welcomed the newly-elected members to the House of Commons. close
