Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservative Party received the most party votes, but was short of a full majority in the House of Commons. During this session, Speaker John Bercow was re-elected as speaker and customarily “dragged unwillingly” back to the speaker’s chair -- a custom that dates back hundreds of years when there could be consequences if the Speaker disagreed with a king. Following Mr. Bercow’s re-election, Prime Minister May and Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn delivered speeches and welcomed the newly-elected members to the House of Commons.
