Senator McCain on Health Care and Bipartisanship Senator McCain (R-AZ) made his first floor speech since being diagnosed with brain cancer. He said the Senate’s “arcane rules and customs are deliberately intended to require broad cooperation.” He also said that the Senate was “more partisan, more tribal more of the time than at any time that I can remember,” and called for a return to bipartisanship. He also added, “Sometimes I wanted to win more for the sake of winning than to achieve a contested policy.”

Regarding health care, he said the system “is a mess” but “We Republicans have looked for a way to end it and replace it with something else without paying a terrible political price. We haven’t found it yet and I’m not sure we will.” He said he voted for the motion to proceed to allow debate and amendments to the bill but he said he would not vote for the bill in its current state. close
