Telephone lines were open for viewer calls and social media comments on the question, “Do you have confidence in the government to handle natural disasters?” The question referred to Tropical Storm Harvey, which made landfall near Corpus Christi, Texas, the previous Friday evening as a hurricane and was continuing to drop massive amounts of rain in the southeast part of the state.

Representative Filemon Vela (D-TX) spoke by phone about the impact of the storm on his 34th Congressional District, parts of which are just south of the hardest hit areas. He also talked about federal, state, and local government preparedness for and response to natural disasters.

Representative Pete Olson (R-TX) was also interviewed by phone about the storm’s impact on his 22nd Congressional District, which is just south of Houston. close
