Federal and state advocates of Funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) appeared before the Senate Finance Committee to urge members to reauthorize its funding, which was set to expire at the end of September 2017. The program serves 9 million middle and low-income children who are ineligible for Medicaid. Among the witnesses was the mother of a CHIP recipient who talked about the services her son receives and the consequences for her family if the program were to expire. The hearing began with remarks by Committee Chair Orrin Hatch (R-UT), who co-sponsored the legislation with the late Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) that created the program. close
