European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker delivered the annual State of the European Union address to lawmakers in Strasbourg, France. He outlined several new proposals for a stronger and tighter EU, including the creation of a European defense union and cybersecurity agency, merging the EU Commission and European Council presidencies, and temporarily halting Turkey’s request for membership in the EU. He also spoke about the United Kingdom’s exit from the EU, announcing that March 29, 2019, was the official date the U.K. would leave the European Union. He told members that the U.K.'s departure is “tragic” but the European Union would move on. close
