Defense Secretary James Mattis and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Joseph Dunford testified at a House Armed Services Committee hearing on President Trump’s military strategy in Afghanistan. Secretary Mattis said for the first time Afghan security forces were fully engaged in offensive operations and suffering fewer casualties than the previous year. General Dunford said the new operational approach intends to put pressure on the Taliban and should break the stalemate in Afghanistan. The witnesses also discussed the need to put pressure on Pakistan to stop providing safe havens for terrorists. close
