Union General Ambrose Burnside Historian Wilson Greene described Union General Ambrose Burnside’s life and career and argued that his unfavorable reputation is largely undeserved. He acknowledged Burnside’s mistakes during the battles at Antietam, Fredericksburg, and the Crater, but contended that his contemporaries used him as a scapegoat. This talk was part of Pamplin Historical Park’s symposium called “Generals We Love to Hate” looking at some of the more controversial military leaders of the Civil War. close
