Union General Benjamin Butler Professor Brian Matthew Jordan talked about Union General Benjamin Butler, who became known in the South as the “Beast” for his stern actions as military governor after the fall of New Orleans. Professor Jordan discussed criticisms of Butler’s battlefield tactics during several fights, as well as questions about some of his financial dealings and those of subordinates under his command. This talk was part of Pamplin Historical Park’s symposium called “Generals We Love to Hate” looking at some of the more controversial military leaders of the Civil War. close
