President Trump announced the nomination of Kirstjen Nielsen to be the next Homeland Security secretary in a ceremony in the East Room of the White House. Ms. Nielsen was nominated to replace John Kelly, who left the post in July 2017 to become White House chief of staff. Ms. Nielsen, a longtime official within the Homeland Security Department, served as Mr. Kelly’s chief of staff when he was Homeland Security secretary and later followed him to the White House where she served as deputy chief of staff. close
