Representatives of the credit reporting industry and consumer protection groups were among the witnesses at a hearing on potential legislative responses to the Equifax data breach, which made vulnerable the personal and financial information of more than 143 million consumers. Many senators focused their questions on what protections consumers needed to be enshrined in law so they have greater control over what financial information is collected on them, and over who can access it and when. close
