Senator John McCain (R-AZ) talks about the 50th anniversary of his being shot down over North Vietnam as a Navy flier and the war’s impact on his life and the country. Senator McCain was shot down over North Vietnam during his 23rd mission on October 26, 1967. He ejected from his Skyhawk bomber into a lake, was captured, beaten, and held in filthy conditions with poor medical care despite life-threatening injuries. Two of the more than five years he was held as a POW were spent in solitary confinement. close
