The Senate Armed Services Committee held a hearing on the nation’s cybersecurity and defense capabilities against cyber attacks. Witnesses included representatives from the Defense Department, FBI, and Homeland Security Department. They were asked about interagency coordination and when to expect a strategy, which at the time of the hearing was six months past due. Members also pressed the witnesses on efforts to better protect the nation’s election systems infrastructure based on lessons learned from the 2016 cycle. White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Rob Joyce was invited to provide testimony but did not participate in the hearing, a point committee chair Senator John McCain (R-AZ) and others remarked upon with disappointment. Senator McCain said the committee would meet to decide whether to subpoena Mr. Joyce for a future hearing. close
