Defense Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF). They told the committee that a new war authorization was “not legally required” to carry out military operations against ISIS, al-Qaeda and the Taliban. In addition, Secretary Mattis and Tillerson said if Congress did pursue new authorization, then, the existing law should not be repealed until a new one if fully in place. In addition, they said a new AUMF must not have time restrictions or be geographically constrained. close
