Witnesses testified at a hearing on funding for Down syndrome research. Representatives Pete Sessions (R-TX) and Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) testified about their personal experiences raising children with Down syndrome. Representative Cheri Bustos (D-IL), who co-chairs the Congressional Task Force on Down Syndrome, also testified. Medical experts, advocates, and an individual with Down syndrome, Frank Stephens, provided testimony on why they want to see National Institutes for Health (NIH) funding increased for Down syndrome research. The panelists maintained that Down syndrome research provides unique opportunities to study other medical fields, including Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, and heart conditions. Witnesses said studying the extra chromosome found in people with Down syndrome could lead to breakthroughs in these other medical fields. close
