Five Energy Department officials and utility executives testified at a Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing on efforts to protect the nation’s energy providers from cybersecurity threats, including attacks from abroad. They talked about efforts already underway -- at federal research facilities, and in private firms -- to boost cybersecurity capabilities for companies operating the U.S. electrical grid, natural gas pipeline system, and other critical pieces of energy infrastructure. Also discussed were ways smaller “microgrids” could help ensure continuity of service in vulnerable locations like Puerto Rico, which was continuing its long recovery from Hurricanes Irma and Maria. close
