President Trump delivered remarks on the opioid epidemic before signing a national public health emergency declaration. The president said that the epidemic had been developing for a long time, and that it would continue to get worse before it got better. He also said that his administration’s actions, such as cracking down on drug trafficking and providing more funding for drug treatment programs and law enforcement, would be the start of a nationwide effort to tackle drug addiction. The declaration was, in part, the result of recommendations from the President’s Commission on Combatting Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis chaired by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (R). First lady Melania Trump also gave remarks before introducing the president. close
