Douglas Wilder was the first African American elected as governor in U.S. history, serving Virginia from 1990 to 1994. Mr. Wilder was a guest speaker in a Virginia Commonwealth University class looking at the political history of the state capitol of Richmond. He reflected on five decades of involvement in state and local politics, which also included terms as a state senator, lieutenant governor and Richmond’s mayor. close
