Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin gave an update on efforts to improve and modernize the VA. Specifically he spoke about waiting times, a national VA identification card program, benefits, and the appeals process. His remarks also included a historical look at federal benefits for veterans. During the audience members' questions portion of the event, Dr. Shulkin addressed the mass shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas, noting that he did not consider the shooter a veteran but an “evil person.” Authorities said the shooter was given a “bad conduct discharge” from the Air Force. close
