President Trump held a joint news conference with Vietnamese President Tranh Dai Quong in Hanoi, part of his trip through Asia centered around the 2017 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit. The two addressed a number of issues, including the importance of U.S.-Vietnamese economic, security, and diplomatic ties. President Trump was also asked about his most recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin during which they talked about Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election. He said, “I’m with our agencies” in their assessment of the election but that President Putin remained adamant he and his government had no role in any interference. President Trump said it was more important for the U.S. to seek strategic alliances with China and Russia on issues of common ground, such as North Korea, and said he was doing a better job interacting with Russia than either Hillary Clinton or President Obama. close
