The House Natural Resources Committee held a hearing with officials from the Financial Oversight and Management Board assigned to lead the efforts in fixing Puerto Rico’s bankrupted economy. Members questioned the board’s role following the devastating impact of Hurricane Maria on the island. Most of the island was still without electricity, and an estimated 100,000 residents had left the island. The mayor of Guaynabo, located about 20 minutes west of San Juan, talked about the communication and recovery challenges on the ground. Other questions from members focused on building code regulations, better communication between agencies, and privatizing Puerto Rico’s electricity system. close
