The former U.S. and Israeli ambassadors to the U.N. were among the witnesses who testified at a hearing on relocating the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Most of the officials and subcommittee members argued that moving the embassy to Jerusalem was the right U.S. diplomatic approach and would not hinder any peace talks in the region. One witness from the Israel Policy Forum cautioned that the U.S. should take the regional security concerns expressed by some of the neighboring Arab countries, such as Jordan, seriously. President Trump promised to move the embassy to Jerusalem during the 2016 presidential campaign. After becoming president, he signed a six-month waiver to delay the move in hopes of spurring peace talks between Israeli and Palestinian officials. The waiver was to expire on December 1, 2017. close
