Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Exploration The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee considered, amended, and passed legislation that would allow a portion of Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Reserve (ANWR) to be open to oil and natural gas drilling. The legislation was intended to be combined with the Senate Republican tax reform bill, which was also under consideration by the Senate Finance Committee. During debate, Democrats expressed concern about the precedent the legislation might set, potentially allowing more reserve land to be opened to energy development in the future. Following the proceeding, Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), the committee’s chair, spoke briefly with the press. close
