Academicians spoke on international trade issues in a “summit” meeting on the North American Free Trade Agreement sponsored by three Washington think-tanks. In the forum, scholars and trade analysts discussed the pending agreement between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, that would lower trade barriers between the countries for the purpose of increasing trade. Opponents of the agreement claim it would cost American jobs by luring American corporations to Mexico for low labor costs and lax environmental and labor regulations. The scholars spoke in panels moderated by members of Congress. The panelists responded to questions from the audience following their prepared remarks. close
