Pending Judicial Nominations The Senate Judiciary Committee held a confirmation hearing for a group of President Trump’s judicial and Commerce Department nominees. A good part of the first hour was spent discussing the committee’s “blue slip” policy and some controversy with respect to its application to a nominee in this hearing. In the blue slip process, senators representing home states of federal judge nominees submit forms, or “blue slips” of paper, to initiate the nominees' confirmation processes. Traditionally, if senators do not turn in their forms to committee leadership, nominees do not receive confirmation hearings and their nominations stall. In the case of this hearing, Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley (R-IA), proceeded with Minnesota Supreme Court Justice David Stras’s confirmation process despite Senator Al Franken (D-MN) withholding his blue slip for Justice Stras' nomination to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. close
