The Center for Strategic and International Studies hosted a discussion about U.S. investments in the economies of developing countries. Speakers included the Egyptian-American Enterprise Fund Chair James Harmon and Tunisian American Enterprise Fund Chair Bowman Cutter. They discussed the challenges and successes of their organizations in supporting economic development and generating financial returns. In the early 1990s, Congress authorized nearly $1.2 billion for the U.S. Agency for International Development to establish new investment funds, known as the “Enterprise Funds,” for countries in Eastern Europe and Eurasia. In 2011, Congress authorized the creation of enterprise funds for both Egypt and Tunisia. close
