The House Natural Resources Federal Lands Subcommittee held a hearing on a bill by Representative Chris Stewart (R-UT) that would create Utah’s sixth national park out of lands previously a part of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, which was established by President Bill Clinton in 1996 and later significantly downsized by President Donald Trump in 2017. Following a break for floor votes, subcommittee members reconvened to continue questioning a panel of four state and local officials from Utah in discussing Representative Stewart’s bill, which some environmental groups said would open up the Escalante canyons area to too much development. close
