At a United Nations Security Council meeting to discuss the situation in the Middle East, the U.S. vetoed a resolution authored by Egypt that would have condemned President Trump’s announcement of the U.S.'s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the pending relocation of the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to that city. The U.S.'s veto, made possible by its role as one of the council’s permanent members, overrode the 14-1 vote in favor of the resolution, which also called on continued work toward a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., said the resolution was an attack on U.S. sovereignty, while critics and allies of the U.S., including the U.K., said the move to relocate the U.S. embassy would severely hamper efforts at establishing peace between Israeli and Palestinian leaders. close
