In this panel discussion numerous views are expressed regarding the effect of the media upon a candidate. For the most part, the panelists present a negative view of the media. Nofziger and Wallach, in particular, argue that the media should not have the ability to destroy a candidate. Further, they assert that such power, usually exercised during a trial or ethics charge, violates a person’s right of presumed innocence. The panelists agree that the whole profession is not guilty of such charges, only those who move beyond the reporting of news into advocacy. close
