The Supreme Court heard oral argument in McCoy v. Louisiana. The case concerns whether a death row inmate’s Sixth Amendment rights were violated after his lawyer admitted his guilt during trial as part of a defense strategy even though the inmate objected. Robert McCoy in 2008 was accused of killing his estranged wife’s three family members. He pleaded not guilty and went to trial in July 2011. The jury convicted him on three counts of first-degree murder. Mr. McCoy, represented by a new attorney, filed suit for a new trial. He was denied, and then appealed to the Louisiana Supreme Court where they, too, ruled against him.
