Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) talked about undocumented migrants who arrived in the U.S. as children, also known as “DREAMers,” and the Trump administration’s March 5, 2018, deadline for ending former President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA allowed some individuals who entered the country as minors illegally, to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and to be eligible for a work permit. In her floor remarks, Senator Hirono called President Trump’s proposed border wall a “vanity project” and said the president had threatened to hold young immigrants “hostage” until money is allocated for the wall. Senator Hirono was one of the lawmakers who met with President Trump at the White House earlier that week about immigration and government funding, which was set to expire on January 19. close
