Navy Secretary Richard Spencer and Chief of Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson testified at a House Armed Services joint subcommittee hearing focusing on surface warfare and combat readiness issues. In addition, they discussed the recommendations of two reviews conducted after several Navy ship collisions. In June 2017, the USS Fitzgerald collided with a cargo ship in the Sea of Japan, killing seven sailors. In August 2017, the USS John S. McCain collided with an oil tanker off the coast of Singapore, killing 10 sailors. Following the hearing, Representatives Joe Wilson (R-SC) and Rob Wittman (R-VA) along with the Navy officials took questions from reporters. close
