Treasury Secretary Llyod Bentsen spoke to a group interested in furthering international commerce on current American trade policy. Issues raised in his remarks included the North American Free Trade Agreement, the current round of GATT talks, and the U.S. trade deficit. He supported the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement, despite the decision by a federal judge earlier in the day to block the passage of the agreement until the government determines its environmental impact to Mexico, Canada and the U.S. He responded to questions from the audience following his prepared remarks. Prior to his speech, Jorge Montano accepted an award from the Consumers for World Trade in the name of Mexican President Carlos Salinas. Secretary Bentsen also received an award from the organization. close
