Senate leaders traded criticism on federal funds running out on January 19. Congressional Republicans had proposed continuing temporary spending authority through mid-February while negotiations continued. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said Democrats were holding the government hostage to get Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called the Republican spending plan a “loser” and said Republicans were unwilling to compromise. close
