Speaking on the Senate floor, Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-TX) said Democrats were responsible for the government shutdown and had “a strategy that lacked an endgame and was never going to work.” He said Democrats got nothing out of their “calculated stunt” and that Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had already planned to bring up legislation to address Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), an Obama administration program protecting some young immigrants from deportation. He then listed national security threats, natural disasters, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and other issues he said should not be ignored to focus on DACA. close
