The FCC held an open meeting on its investigation into the January 13, 2018, false emergency missile alert in Hawaii. Chair Ajit Pai described the “panic and outrage” felt by many residents on the island and said it appeared Hawaii did not have adequate safeguards in place for human error and that when the false alert happened, there was no plan for immediate action. A preliminary report concluded there was miscommunication between the day and night shifts and that the state worker who issued the warning believed there was a threat. Earlier reports said the false alert was an accident. The commission later voted unanimously on a measure to offer enhancements to the wireless emergency alert system that would include adding Spanish-language texts and making sure geotracking services were updated so only the people in disaster areas received emergency alerts. close
