In reaction to the January 13, 2018, false missile alert in Hawaii, a House Homeland Security subcommittee held a hearing on ensuring reliable and accurate emergency alerts. Witnesses included representatives from FEMA, and the New York and Rhode Island emergency management agencies, as well as the wireless technology industry. Committee members stressed the need for better communication plans in the case of an emergency, more on-the-job training for evacuations, and addressed concerns that the public can suffer from “alert fatigue” and opt out of some wireless alert messages. close
