Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan and Assistant Defense Secretary Randall Schriver testified at a hearing to assess U.S. strategy in Afghanistan. Mr. Sullivan talked about the Trump administration’s “conditions-based” approach with an aim toward a political solution and the role of neighboring Pakistan. He said the U.S. could lift its suspension of security assistance imposed in January 2018 against Pakistan if the country takes actions against militant groups operating within its borders. Mr. Schriver discussed the U.S. military’s role to train and advise Afghan security forces. close
