During a hearing on President Trump’s fiscal year 2019 budget request, Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin defended a trip to Europe in 2017 that an inspector general report said violated administration ethics and policies. Secretary Shulkin told the House Veterans' Affairs Committee that the trip was appropriate but said he understands the optics were not good. Representative Mike Coffman (R-CO), a frequent critic of the secretary, responded to Secretary Shulkin, saying “it is not the optics that are not good. It’s the facts that are not good.” Representative Coffman, who called for Mr. Shulkin to resign the day before the hearing, spoke with reporters after it concluded. close
