President Trump talked about gun violence and school safety with many of the nation’s governors, who were in Washington, D.C., for the National Governors Association annual winter meeting. In response to the most recent school shooting, this one in Parkland, Florida, President Trump said he wants to ban bump stock devices used to turn semi-automatic rifles into automatic weapons, regardless of Congress' actions on the issue. He also said that the country should look into “hardening” schools and focusing on mental health issues, and that he had lunch with the NRA over the weekend and that the lobbyist group wants to help solve the issue of gun violence. During the meeting, many governors offered ideas, including Governor Rick Scott (R-FL), who outlined steps his state was taking in the aftermath of the recent shooting in Parkland. Vice President Mike Pence also spoke. close
