The bill was prompted by the February 14, 2018, Parkland, Florida, high school shooting in which 17 people were killed. The National Rifle Association was quick to respond to the bill, filing a lawsuit on the same day it was signed. The new restrictions in the bill included raising the minimum age requirement to 21 to buy firearms, the banning of “bump stocks” that essentially turn semi-automatic firearms into automatic weapons, a three-day waiting period to purchase guns, and other provisions.
