New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner hosted a look back at the state’s 1968 presidential primary. The panel included then-supporters of Democratic Senator Eugene McCarthy, President Lyndon Johnson, and Republican Richard Nixon. Senator McCarthy opposed the Vietnam War, and his strong challenge to President Johnson in the nation’s first primary--along with Robert Kennedy’s entry soon thereafter--is thought to have played a role in the president’s decision to pull out of the race less than three weeks later. On the Republican side, Mr. Nixon’s victory launched him on a path to victory in November. close
