A ceremony commemorating Martin Luther King Jr.'s “Mountaintop” speech at the Mason Temple in Memphis the night before his assassination. In the speech, he reaffirmed his dedication to nonviolent protest as the means for bringing about change and predicted eventual success for the aims of the civil rights movement. But it’s best remembered because he candidly discussed the threats against him in a manner that seemed to foreshadow his death. Speakers included two of Rev. King’s children, Bernice King and Martin Luther King III, as well as Andrew Young, who was with MLK on the Lorraine Motel balcony at the time of the shooting. The event took place at the Mason Temple and was co-organized by the church and AFSCME. close
