Joint Chief of Staff Chair General Joseph Dunford and Defense Secretary James Mattis testified before the House Armed Services Committee on the military’s fiscal year 2019 budget request. Secretary Mattis addressed the alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma, Syria, saying, “I believe there was a chemical attack and we’re looking for the actual evidence.” In addition, he vowed to notify congressional leaders prior to any attack but said no decision has been made yet by President Trump. Other topics included Iran and North Korea’s nuclear programs, military strategy in Afghanistan, nuclear modernization efforts, and force readiness issues. close
