At Russia’s request, the U.N. Security Council convened an emergency meeting to respond to the U.K.'s assertion that Russia was involved in a nerve agent attack against a former Russian spy and his daughter living in the U.K. Russia’s ambassador to the U.N. called the allegations of their involvement a “fake story” and “theater of the absurd.” He stressed that Russia demanded clear answers from the U.K. and that London had “poisoned” their relations with other countries. He warned the U.K. that they were “playing with fire” with what he called “unsubstantiated accusations.” Following his remarks, the U.K.'s ambassador to the U.N. Karen Pierce responded, saying the U.K. has “nothing to hide” and that their “actions would stand up to any scrutiny.” close
