The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Border Security and Immigration held a hearing on the immigration court system. Administered by the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), the immigration court system had faced an increasing backlog of cases and its independence and efficacy have been the subject of recent debate. Witnesses provided testimony on ways to decrease the case backlog while upholding due process. Other issues included the Legal Orientation Program (LOP) and the recent 5-4 Supreme Court ruling in Sessions v. Dimaya, which found that “violent felony” as defined for removal provisions was unconstitutionally vague. close
