The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Pereira v. Sessions. The case concerns immigrant removal statutes and the deportation notice of a Brazilian man who entered the U.S. on a tourist visa in 2000. The Homeland Security Department (DHS) in 2006 sent him a deportation notice to appear for overstaying his visa, but the notice gave no specific hearing date or time, only that it would be in the future. A letter with a date and time to appear was eventually sent to the his street address, but he never got it because he receives his mail through a post office box. A deportation hearing was held in October 2007, and as a no-show he was ordered deported. In 2013, he was pulled over and arrested by police for operating a vehicle under the influence and detained by DHS. He then applied for a removal cancellation.
